Once the PBGV and GBGV were one breed, the Basset Griffon Vendeen, whose origins were in Vendee in France. In the 1970'2 crossing between the Petite and Grand ended and they were kept as separate breeds. This breed was developed to hunt game in thick undergrowth and are still used to hunt boar, deer, and rabbits.

This breed is a stubborn hound-type but also a loving family dog. It is a larger size class than the more recognized related breed, the PBGV. (The petite is recognized by the AKC; the Grand is not.)
There are two other related breeds, the Grand Griffon Vendeen and Briquet Griffon Vendeen.
